Fewer construction workers means less — and slower — residential construction, which in turn leads to higher home prices, according to a 2023 report from researchers at the University of Utah and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Builders and infrastructure projects are in desperate need of all kinds of construction workers, but especially skilled tradespeople. Simonson said that allowing more immigrants into the country to fill construction jobs is crucial. Making the industry more appealing to womenBoushey pointed out that the share of women in the overall construction industry has climbed. The construction industry is also at a disadvantage because most workers can't do manual labor until they retire.

Joe Biden is one of the most unpopular presidents in modern American history. In Gallup polling, his approval ratings are lower than those of any president embarking on a re-election campaign, from Dwight Eisenhower to Donald Trump. Apart from anxiety about his age, there isn’t a chattering-class consensus or common shorthand for why his presidency is such a political flop. When things went south for other recent chief executives, there was usually a clearer theory of what was happening. Trump’s unpopularity was understood to reflect his chaos and craziness and authoritarian forays.

CNN —Oregon leaders joined forces to declare a 90-day state of emergency in downtown Portland, funneling resources into the city’s deadly fentanyl crisis. Oregon voters passed Measure 110 in 2020, which decriminalized some use of hard-drugs, including fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid. The measure has received criticism, as opioid overdose deaths steadily climbed since. Opioid overdose deaths in the state increased from 280 in 2019 to 956 in 2022, according to the state’s data. Experts say reversing the trends in overdose deaths really depends on broader access to and use of treatments for opioid use disorder.

It’s a tricky thing to write a crotchety old person, and pretty soon the reader wonders what sort of redeeming qualities will make it desirable to spend time in Eugene’s presence. “Well, imagine being young,” he explains. Eugene begins the novel in self-confinement, hiding away in his room doing jigsaw puzzles, but Angel has a charm that slowly wins over the grouch. Angel gives him nicknames, like calling Eugene “homie,” “dog” and “Geno,” much to his chagrin; and he urges the old man to leave his bubble. Eventually Eugene’s reserve cracks, and he agrees to lunch at an outdoor picnic table, where he begins to tell Angel the story of his life.

Fajita favorites of recent years have included the espresso martini, all manner of blue cocktails and any drink on fire. The latest, though, has something else in common with fajitas besides contagious appeal: layers of colorful ingredients. In a layered cocktail, the various liquid components settle out in separate strata, giving the drink a striped or ombré look. There are two ways to layer a cocktail: floats and sinkers. A sinker is also poured in last but, owing to the ingredient’s weight, falls to the bottom of the glass.

The most popular drink there is the Compadre, made with mezcal, chinotto liqueur, agave syrup, sweet vermouth, bitters and the inevitable Campari. And soon there will be a third smaller, invitation-only space in the basement called Sala Gaspare, named after the company founder, Gaspare Campari. Architectural monuments stand next to newer construction; timeless sartorial style meets current fashion on the street each day. The aperitivo will always be king in Milan.
